When coming down to Cancun you will find that your options are limited when searching for a suitable trip to take your kids fishing.
Most marinas offer deepsea fishing which in our opinion is not very child friendly. If you’re thinking of taking your kids fishing in Cancun you need to keep a few things in mind. Offshore fishing in Cancun can be a very strenuous activity, seas can be rough sometimes, equipment that is used for this type of fishing is most often heavy and species that are targeted are big fish.
If you have children in the age group, let’s say between 6 and 15 years old you might want to consider taking them light tackle fishing in Cancun. On most deep sea fishing charters in Cancun usually the mates on the boat are the ones that will set the hook and then pass the rod to your kid so he or she can reel it in if they are able to. On our Cancun flats fishing trips they get to do it all, from setting the hook, fighting the fish and landing it and most often they will feel that it’s actually their fish and that they’ve accomplished something.
The waters that we fish on our Cancun light tackle trips are in the lagoons around Cancun. The boat rides are always short, 10 to 15 min. and you are at the area where you start fishing. The waters are also nice and calm when fishing in the Cancun lagoon as there is always some protection from the wind, depending on which direction the wind blows from, the mangroves will give us shelter.
Equipment that we use on our guided Cancun fishing charters in the lagoon is very light. It is similar as when fishing for Bass. The reels are small (Shimano 2000 and 2500 size reels) with only 10 lb test line. If your kid has some fishing experience before coming down to Cancun he or she will have no problem handling the rods and reels down here, they’re small and light.
Species that we target when fishing in Cancun back waters are most of the time smaller species in comparison to the Offshore species. The biggest and heaviest fish in the lagoons are Tarpon which can weigh up to 50 lbs. When taking your children fishing in Cancun it is important that they can handle the fish on their own. Most times when we ask young kids what they want to catch when going on our light tackle fishing tour in Cancun, the first thing they will say is “Barracuda”. This type of specie together with Snappers and Jacks are very common in the Nichupte lagoon and are usually very easy to catch. They rarely weigh more than 10 lbs and average 2 to 6 lbs so very easy for them to reel in.
