Fly fishing in Puerto Morelos is limited to the beach and the dock area as there are no lagoons surrounding the area. Species that can be caught of the beach include Snappers, Barracudas, Jacks and sometimes if you’re lucky enough Bonefish and Snook but this is not very common.

There are no fly fishing charters that actually depart from Puerto Morelos so you’ll have to come down to Cancun which is the nearest location to target Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and Snook.

For those of you who want to try some light tackle fishing in Puerto Morelos a 7 foot rod with 16 lbs test line should be enough to do some fishing on the beach and dock of Puerto Morelos. Especially early mornings and late afternoons can be very productive to fish the bottom for Snappers. Just put a little piece of shrimp, octopus or conch shell on your hook with a ¼ oz weight and you’re good to go. Make sure you get your fishing license with the local authorities. There is no flats fishing in Puerto Morelos, for that the nearest place is the Cancun Nichupte lagoon which is about a 20 min. cab ride.

Most of the fishing in Puerto Morelos is done by Panga boats and they fish nearby areas trolling and bottom fishing. The local captains are very knowledgeable and you can get some pretty good deals when trying to buy with them directly. The fishing charters in Puerto Morelos don’t have to go very far to get to deep water which is a bonus.
